ITF HOLDS APRC & APSRC MEETINGS IN THE PHILIPPINES

The International Transport Workers Federation recently held in Manila the Asia/Pacific Seafarers’ Regional Committee (APSRC) and the Asia/Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) meetings from 12 through 14 of May 2010. The APSRC is composed of seafarer members organizations from the region while the APRC has broader membership as it includes members from all the other transportation sectors of the ITF – Dockers, Railway, Inland Navigation, Civil Aviation and Road Transportation. Over seventy (70) delegates attended the meetings.

Mr. David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary, and Eduardo Chagas, Overall Regional Coordinator and Mahendra Sharma, Asia/Pacific Regional Secretary were among the ITF top officials in attendance.

The ITF APSRC & APRC meets annually, in between ITF Congresses, to discuss and resolve the relevant issues within the different sectors and elect the regional chairperson and vice-chairperson following sub-regional classifications and sectoral representations (including women’s group) – also to determine regional representation in ITF’s Executive Board.  Resolutions adopted by the regional committees are also submitted to the Congress (subject to deadline) for adoption.  In August this year, the ITF will hold its 42ndCongress in Mexico.

AMOSUP-PTGWO-ITF, the host union, assisted the ITF Asia/Pacific Regional Office organize the meetings and provided the conference secretariat held in a hotel in the metropolis.
